چکیده سخنرانی:

 

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an ever-increasing threat to global health. Rapid evolution of AMR is linked to complex dynamics in bacterial populations. Therefore, an improved understanding and prediction of AMR evolutionary dynamics should allow for better diagnosis and outbreak control. In this talk, I will discuss recent population genomic advances to obtain in-depth insights into the evolution and epidemiology of AMR strains. In particular, I will talk about how I utilized whole genome sequencing of pathogens to reconstruct recent population histories at a fine resolution. I will go on to discuss how I used these histories to establish the rate of the spread of antibiotic resistance for a number of major emerging pathogens and to scrutinize their evolutionary dynamics. The findings contribute to the understanding of AMR determinants, recent regional epidemiology, and the extensive dissemination of AMR genes via horizontal gene transfer across different hosts and settings. Furthermore, I will highlight evolutionary and epidemiological links between pathogens residing within-host and those occupying environmental niches. Building upon the first section, I will move on to discuss how I employed machine learning techniques to accurately predict antibiotic resistance from full genomes. In conclusion, the significance of findings to provide a rational basis for decision making on antibiotic therapy in clinical settings will be discussed.
